Teaching Texts (Teach)

ed. Tarrin Wills;

Download the companion handbook (Tarrin Wills) here: Introduction to Old Norse.

The skaldic database has been adapted here to include prose texts for teaching purposes. The text of Hrólfs saga and Skáldskaparmál are based on texts in A New Introduction to Old Norse, ed. Anthony Faulkes, published by the Viking Society. Laxdœla saga and Grœnlendinga saga are taken from the Íslenzk fornrit series. The text of Vǫlsunga saga is from Gordon’s Introduction to Old Norse. The first section of Hrólfs saga includes a close, unidiomatic parallel translation by Tarrin Wills.

Select an individual section of text by clicking on the numbers next to the texts on the right. Once you have selected a section of text, moving the mouse cursor over a word will give the headword, grammatical information about the word, and notes where they are included.

Select the ‘concordance’ tab for a glossary.

The ‘quiz’ tab will randomly select a word which you can then answer grammatical questions about.

Audio for each segment of text can be heard by using the embedded player.
